While the CDC and other agencies have set appropriate and important standards for mold cleanup and remediation after a natural disaster such as a hurricane or flood, many re-infections and re-colonizations appear to be from opportunistic spore dispersion.
Further, in areas of high mold growth – like in New Orleans after Katrina – spore counts tend to be much higher, and can be carried through open windows, doors, on clothes, by pets, and via other articles brought into the house, including building materials.
Based upon clinical and case studies, by replacing existing lighting with low-cost LED fixtures that generate continuous blue 405-470nm light, airborne and surface spores will be greatly reduced. The intermediate operation is a key element, since re-contamination may continue to be a threat, even years after a flood or initial contamination.
Unlike continuous disinfection, scrubbing and bleaching a surface once doesn’t prevent new mold growth later. It is also important to note that air cleaners, such as those that are HEPA (High efficiency particulate air) cleaners or PECO (Photo-electrical Chemical Oxidation) cleaners do not disinfect surfaces. They are dependent upon air circulation and filtration. They have limited volumes of air that can be treated. Also, PECO is not widely available or scalable. Further, LED lights are eligible for rebates and financial reimbursement via renewable and green energy programs. Among Houston residents affected by the flooding, only about 20% have flood insurance. These rebate programs and financial reimbursement programs could help fund replacement 405-470nm Disinfecting and Mold Killing LED lighting.
