UV-C Robots are being marketed as the “state of the art” killing technology for MRSA, Staph and other pathogenic bacteria in the Healthcare Industry. In truth, while very effective killing machines, they have significant negatives in the way they operate and their effect on people:
1) prolonged exposure to UV-A, UV-B or UV-C light in the 200- 380 nm range may result in acute chronic health effects on skin, eyes and the immune system
2) since UV-C is especially harmful to people, rooms undergoing disinfection must be vacated and taken out of use while robot is operational
3) while bacterial killing period is relatively short, a room generally requires the robot to be repositioned at least twice during disinfection to cover the entire area
4) once the room has been used, it will require another disinfection procedure before use by another person.
